Walk-to-School Trophy  Information

Walk-To-School Day is an annual event in Brockport, New York aiming to promote healthy lifestyles. I was asked if I could design/fabricate a trophy to be given to the school with the largest percentage of walkers on Walk-To-School Day. Since walking to school is not only good for those doing the walking, it is also good for the environment, I decided to make the walkers for the trophy out of things from nature that you might find along the way as you walk---pinecones, acorns, and sticks.

Edward Lehman fabricated the wood base.

Apron for Peeling Onions   Statement

peeling onionsI was one of 41 regional artists invited to create a new work in response to a piece in the collection of the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York in celebration of its centennial.  The work I chose was Lilly Martin Spencer’s Peeling Onions.

I always liked this painting.  There is such a nice combination of strength (arm holding a raised knife) and vulnerability (tears in her eyes).  Since the woman depicted is working in a kitchen and not wearing an apron, I decided to make one for her.

Apron for Peeling Onions was exhibited next to the painting in Memorial Art Gallery the spring of 2013 in the exhibition, “Art Reflected:  The Inspiration of One Hundred Years.”

Convocation Torch   Statement

In 2010, to mark The College at Brockport’s 175th year, I was asked to create a “Convocation Torch” to be used in the annual event that welcomes new students to campus.  My design for this cast bronze torch was inspired by an African drum in celebration of our Academic Convocation tradition of our procession being led by Sankofa, our African Dance and Drum Ensemble, which has been part of this event from its beginning.  The torch key is a variation on the College’s torch and shield logo.  It seemed appropriate that education be the “key” because how a torch gets lit---what ignites the flame, inspires the minds, sparks the imagination, etc.---is so important.
